A 40-year-old man has been arrested after a mother Yasmin Begum  of two was stabbed to death in Bethnal Green, London, while her children were at school, Scotland Yard said.

Official identification of the woman’s body has not yet taken place, but detectives believe the victim is 40-year-old Yasmin Begum.

Her family has been informed and is being assisted by specially trained officials.

An autopsy carried out on Saturday found the cause of death to be multiple injuries from sharp violence.

The man arrested on Sunday remains in police custody.

The victim was found by police at her home in Bethnal Green, east London, at 4.05pm on Thursday.

The alarm was sounded after the 40-year-old woman failed to pick up her two sons from school that afternoon.

Ms Begum had brought her children to Bangabandhu Primary School on Thursday morning and was scheduled to pick them up in the afternoon.

Teachers became concerned when the woman failed to pick up her children and called police, who went to the woman’s home on Globe Road.

Police found Ms Begum at the property but she was pronounced dead at the scene after suffering a series of stab wounds.

Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith, lead investigator, said: “My thoughts are with Yasmin’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.

“I want to assure you that we are working around the clock to give you the answers you deserve.

“It is heartbreaking that another woman has been killed. All women and girls have the right to feel safe at any time of the day or night, in public or at home, and we will do everything we can to find those responsible for this.

“Tackling violence against women is one of the Met’s top priorities. Law enforcement officers, including forensic scientists, are staying on the ground.

“We will continue to conduct door-to-door investigations and local residents will also see additional police in the area. We ask that any witnesses or anyone with information contact us.

“No matter how insignificant your information might be, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us. It could be the key to this investigation.”

Neighbors said one of the boys was in the reception class while the older son was in the 5th grade.

A friend described Ms Begum as “fun” and a “fantastic mother”.

He told MyLondon: “I’ve never seen a mum like that. Fantastic mother – I wouldn’t doubt that for a second. She teaches them privately online – and invests a lot of time in them.”

The friend, who couldn’t believe the tragic news, added that the mother was a “very outgoing and spontaneous person” who “would try anything” and “has a big heart”.

A 67-year-old neighbor said: “I know she was supposed to pick up her children, two boys, from the local school but didn’t come, so they sounded the alarm.

‘The two teachers came here with the officers when they burst through the door.

“She has lived here for 10 years. She was a nice lady and we never had any problems.

“I know she had a partner and an ex-partner who visited her sometimes.

“We are completely shocked because something like this doesn’t happen here.”

A father-of-four, who has two children who are classmates of the woman’s children, said: “I saw two teachers at the school knock on the door with no answer. They tried to get an answer.

“Later, the officers came with the teachers to break down the door. I have a deep sadness in my heart as you hear about what happened.

“My children, who are classmates, worry a lot about their friends.
