Smith said he suspected she put poison in her chicken wings on June 2.
At around 4 a.m., he filled a cup with lighter fluid, poured it over his head and lit it with a lighter, police said.
Rescuers returned home and took the man to hospital with severe burns to his chest, head, ears, hands, neck and face.
While recovering, her husband told authorities that Smith had acted strangely for the past three or four months.
She said the couple had an argument the night she set the fire because she told Smith he would leave her and move out of his home.
Smith was arrested on charges of arson, which ruthlessly compromised safety and wreaked havoc, WDJT reported. His court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday.
