Scott Quinn Berkett was arrested without incident after he was indicted in a federal criminal complaint alleging he sent thousands of dollars to Bitcoin to arrange the murder and then transferred an additional $ 1,000 to the alleged killer, who was actually an undercover agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Berkett met the woman online last year, according to an affidavit. She then flew to Los Angeles to meet Berkett in person in late October. The woman, who described his behavior as “sexually aggressive”, tried, according to the affidavit, several times to end the relationship after the trip.
In April, a family member of the victim called and texted Berklet’s father phone after learning that he was continuing to contact the woman. On April 20, Berkett appeared to reply with a text that read, “Consider this matter closed.”
According to the affidavit, Berkett then allegedly contacted a group on the dark internet promoting murder-for-hire services. The group, which law enforcement officials claimed was a fraud, reached out to a media agency, who in turn passed the information on to the FBI.
Berkett reportedly filed his order for the hit on April 28, writing, “I want it to look like an accident, but a robbery might work better.” As long as she’s dead. I also want your phone to be retrieved and irreparably destroyed in the process. ”
An undercover FBI agent posing as a killer contacted Berkett on Wednesday. Berkett then made the final $ 1,000 payment late Thursday afternoon, the affidavit said.
If convicted as a defendant, Berkett faces a maximum legal sentence of 10 years in federal prison. He is expected to appear in the US District Court on May 25th.
