Saarah Ahmed suffered from Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome (EDS)
Student Saarah Ahmed suffered from Ehler’s Danlos Syndrome (EDS), an inherited connective tissue disorder affecting the skin, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, internal organs and bones.
She died suddenly on Tuesday, after using her platform to talk about her illness.
His proud mum Shefaly Begum now wants to continue Saarah’s mission of educating people about EDS.
Saarah, from Carlisle, Cumbria, was an alumnus of Trinity School and was studying A-levels sociology and psychology.
Shefaly said: “Saarah was determined to raise awareness about hidden disabilities such as EDS.
“That’s what motivated her when she became a finalist in Miss Universe Great Britain.
“She was a wonderful person – caring and wise beyond her years. She had so much wisdom. She wanted to go to college to study neurology. She wanted to help other people.
“She was our only daughter and she was our princess.”
She had major surgery as a teenager to correct a curvature of the spine.
And last year, she traveled to Leeds to meet with the Miss Universe judges – but pulled out due to lockdown and health concerns.
In her entry video, she said: “If I were to be Miss Universe Great Britain, I would raise awareness of hidden disabilities, using myself as an example.
“I would show the daily struggles we face. In particular, I would like to publicize Danlos’Ehler syndrome. ”
“There are only 15 people with my disease in the UK. My condition affects every part of my body.
“Some of the issues I face are my bones breaking up every day; extreme pain; heart problems; and the curvature of the spine and I have many surgeries to correct that.
“Just getting out of bed is a huge struggle for me. Even though it will be a very difficult trip, I want to prove to everyone that I can do it too.
Paula Abbandonato, director of Miss Universe Great Britain, paid a moving tribute to Saarah by declaring: “I have been organizing the Miss Universe Great Britain contest since 2008 and it is not often that I meet a candidate who makes an impression. as durable as Saarah.
“The pandemic put an end to Saarah’s competition last year, but we had every hope that she would return in 2021. Our hearts are broken.
“This world has lost a beautiful woman and a wonderful soul. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family who we know loved and cared for her so much.
Saarah died at Freeman Hospital in Newcastle after suffering from liver failure and severe colitis.
His family said the precise medical reason for his death was not yet confirmed.
Saarah leaves her mother, her loving father and her four brothers.
