Ruben Verastigui, 27, has reportedly admitted to being part of a child pornography ring. After a year-long investigation, he was charged with distributing child pornography, according to the DC Metropolitan Police.
Verastigui reportedly received videos of abused children as part of an online group that officials from the Department of Child Exploitation of the Department of Homeland Security referred to as “Motion A” in court documents describing their investigation. During a raid on Verastigui’s home, a criminal complaint revealed several files of child pornography on his cell phone and other images of a child who was sexually abused.
At the time of his arrest, Verastigui was employed in the communications department of the non-profit organization Citizens for Responsible Energy Solutions.
“The details of the allegations against Mr. Verastigui are tragic and shocking,” the non-profit organization said in a statement to the Post. “He is no longer employed with the organization and we stand ready to work fully with law enforcement inquiries in this area to the extent necessary.”
Prior to joining the nonprofit in July, Verastigui served two years for the United States Senate, including one and a half years as the committee’s chief digital strategist. Senate Republican and nine year months as digital director of the Joint Economic Committee of the US Congress, according to his LinkedIn profile.
His connection with the GOP was first reported on Twitter by Jared Holt, a researcher at the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab.
