London experienced its deadliest year for teenage murders in more than a decade after a 16-year-old boy Rishmeet Singh was stabbed to death for a “counterfeit Gucci bag”.

Rishmeet Singh 28th teenager to be killed on the streets of London

Rishmeet Singh became the 28th teenager to be killed on the streets of London that year, just one less than the record of 29 in 2008 for teenagers killed in the capital in a single year.

Just hours after the young Sikh boy’s death, Scotland Yard announced the results of a knife attack in which officials confiscated nearly 300 blades and arrested nearly 1,000 people in a week-long campaign.

His death on Wednesday came just a week after Jermaine Cools, 14, died in a knife attack in Croydon, south London.

Rishmeet, who came from an Afghan Sikh family, is said to have had various jobs to look after his disabled mother, who lives above a shop near the place where he was killed.

His mother was seen crying at the scene after learning that their only child had been killed.

The teenager had been followed by a number of teenagers before falling outside his home on Raleigh Road in Southall, west London.

A local shopkeeper told the Evening Standard, “I knew him, he was a good guy. His friends all say he was stabbed over this Gucci bag, it wasn’t even real. It’s awful. ‘

Metropolitan Police officers were called into the street at 9:07 p.m. Wednesday after reports of a knife stabbing following a fight with a group of people.

Officials came along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and found the 16-year-old with stab wounds.

He died a short time later on the scene, which sparked a murder investigation.

His family was informed and assisted by specialized officials.

Detective Chief Inspector James Shirley, who is leading the investigation, said, “My thoughts and those of my team are with Rishmeet’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time.

“I want to assure them and the wider community that we are working around the clock to bring the person or persons responsible for Rishmeet’s death to justice.

“I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate my appeal to everyone who was in the Raleigh Road area shortly after 9pm on Wednesday and saw this incident to come forward.

“You may have important evidence that could help us move this investigation forward.

“I would also ask local residents or road users who were near Raleigh Road at the time of this attack to review any footage they may have made with the doorbell, dashboard, or CCTV cameras. If you can help, please contact us. ‘

By this afternoon a Section 35 Dissolution Order has been approved in Southall Broadway, Southall Green, Havelock Estate, Uxbridge City Center and Hayes City Center, giving officers the authority to order people to leave an area.

Residents in Hounslow, Hillingdon and Ealing were told that they should expect an “increased police presence” in the coming days.

Chief Superintendent Sean Wilson, chief of police in the area, said, “Rishmeet’s family is devastated by his death and my thoughts are with them. Special detectives continue to work flat out to find out who was responsible for this attack.

“I would also appeal to the public to contact you if they have any information that could aid the investigation.

“I know this tragic incident will understandably shocked the local community, and our officials across the Western Territory share the shock.”
