The leader of a Mexico-based heroin smuggling ring that distributed the drug to cells in Portland and southwestern Washington was sentenced Monday to just over eight years in federal prison.

Paul Alberto Guillen, 27, is the last of 24 defendants convicted in the ring and was the Mexico-based organizer who made occasional trips to Portland, according to The Oregonian / OregonLive.

The investigation into the state wiretapping began with federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents targeting a Portland trafficker who was selling heroin and oxycodone pills from home, prosecutors said.

Researchers identified their source of supply in 2014 and started further research. Guillén oversaw the weekly distribution of heroin from Nayarit, Mexico, and north to Portland with the help of three cousins, according to US Assistant Attorney Thomas Edmonds.

They were distributing between 5 and 10 pounds of heroin a week in the Portland area.

In late December 2014, when Guillén’s cousin Alexis Guillén-Robles was arrested, officials confiscated seven pounds of heroin and more than $ 50,000 in cash after raising money with another cousin, Christopher, in Vancouver. Washington, according to the prosecutor.

Guillén pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute and possess heroin with the intention of distributing heroin and to conspiracy to commit money laundering.

Guillén’s lawyer, Sohaye Lee, said Guillén’s father was a major drug dealer and that drug trafficking was normal for him.

Guillén apologized in court.
