Kesha Luwan Lucille Tate will be remembered as someone who “gave her friends the shirt she took off,” neighbor Latosha McFadden told The Associated Press.

Last month, the 42-year-old South Carolina mother of nine was killed when Nicholas Skylar Lucas, a neighbor who allegedly shot objects on her lawn, shot her with a .45 caliber handgun.

Although initially charged with manslaughter, Lucas now faces murder charges, used a firearm while under the influence and fired a firearm at a home after authorities said their investigations disproved his claim that the bullet ricocheted off a satellite dish.

He denied shooting Kesha on purpose and told the bail hearing that the shooting was a “total accident,” according to the Associated Press.

It wasn’t immediately clear if Lucas had an attorney who could speak on his behalf.

“If that man had known my sister, he would never have killed her,” Denise Tate, Kesha’s sister, told the AP. “He would give him shelter, a foot to eat, clothes, everything else. Anything he needed, even for his family, would help him.”

At the time of the shooting, Kesha was cooking dinner for her family and Lucas was shooting at targets in the yard with his friends, according to the AP. Kesha then asked her neighbor from her back door to stop shooting.

When she pulled back the curtain a few minutes later, her brother-in-law Terry Manning said her children said they shot her. As WYFF reports, the four-year-old was at home at the time of the shooting.

“I thought he would bury me first. I went there today to get the coffins for my baby. I didn’t think I had to do that,” Kesha’s mother, Beverly Wray, told the broadcaster.

“She always made sure I took care of myself. Even as an adult, she was always there. She was my backbone,” Denise said of her sister. “So I have to stick together and stay strong for these kids and his grandson.”

A GoFundMe for Kesha, organized by eldest daughter Traleekia Tate, has already raised over $12,300. The family is now hoping the state’s gun laws will change and is pushing for a “Kesha Tate Targets Act” to prevent targeted practices from being carried out in residential areas.

“This is a senseless death that could have been avoided had the gun owner been responsible and chosen a safer place to train,” Cherokee County Sheriff Steve Mueller said, according to the WMBF. “It’s amazing that one person thinks it’s okay to practice aiming or shooting a firearm near so many other houses in a neighborhood.”

In 2020, South Carolina was found to have the ninth highest death rate from guns, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

“That he’s endangering the lives of all these children,” said Beverly Vercher, Kesha’s sister. “We will not stand by and watch manslaughter.”
