The hairdresser is sunbathing topless on Blacks Beach, north of Mackay, Queensland, when a teenage girl, unknown to her but lurking nearby, suddenly attacked her.
She sunbathed while her mining friend Dylan Jay Gorham slept after the night shift.
Odgaard told the Daily Mail he believed she was only millimeters from death when the knife was allegedly driven into her heart, the blade ricocheting off the bones in her chest, saving her.
The 58-year-old builder called Monday’s alleged attack a “horror movie,” as Jones suffered multiple stab wounds up to an inch wide.
He speculated that, given the size of the wounds, it was a “large knife” that had been used in the alleged attack.
The father of two was working on a nearby construction site when he heard a desperate cry for help.
Odgaard said Jones “had blood on the sides of his face, legs and arms, and he pressed a blood-soaked towel to his chest.
“The first thing he said was ‘They stabbed me, they stabbed me, I don’t want to die, I don’t want to die.’
“He didn’t realize how bad he was until I was eight or ten yards away and could see all of his injuries.”
Luckily for the bloody woman, the mason is trained in first aid, so he immediately presses his wounds to contain the blood and waits for help to arrive on the beach.
Odgaard said he was relieved to see that the blade “hadn’t hit an artery and his lungs weren’t punctured, but he was covered in blood, including a wound to his temple.”
Jones had told her that before the alleged “strange” stab, she could sunbathe topless “on her back in the sand.”
She was taken to the Mackay Base Hospital in serious condition.
Mackay Criminal Investigation Section investigators charged a 16-year-old with an act designed to cause grievous bodily harm.
The young man has been denied bail and will appear in Mackay Juvenile Court on September 14.
Queensland Police said officers were called to an area of Blacks Beach Road around 12:20 pm Monday, “where the seriously injured 23-year-old was staying.
