A California man has been charged with arson after starting the blaze that devastated a 250-year-old Los Angeles mission last year, authorities said on Tuesday.
John David Corey, 57, was involved in a press release for arson and first-degree theft for an alleged July 11 fire at Mission San Gabriel, a southern California landmark. Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon said in a press release.

“The loss to the mission has run into millions, but the loss to the community is immeasurable,” Gascon said in a statement.
The fire caused extensive damage to the historic building, which contained artifacts from the late 18th century, as well as original walls, floors and vaulted ceilings.
Established in 1771, the mission was the fourth established in California by Franciscan priest Junipero Serra, NBC Los Angeles reported.
According to prosecutors, Corey broke into the building early in the morning and started the fire that engulfed the building and destroyed its century-old roof.
In a report last month, KABC-TV reported that efforts were being made to restore the building and replace the roof in time for the mission’s 250th anniversary in September.
No date has been set for Corey’s trial, the prosecutor said.
