A YOUNG MAN died after losing his balance as he slid along a railing in front of his girlfriend in a football stadium, he heard an investigation.
Jack Watson, 24, was attending a work Christmas party with his childhood sweetheart when he tragically crashed in two flights at a Derby County Football Club bar in 2019.
Paramedics rushed to Igor’s Lounge in iPro Stadium, but failed to rescue the design engineer who was celebrating with colleagues from Expleo Limited.
Derby Coroner’s Court heard his family pay tribute to the “kindhearted and caring” man on Wednesday, reports the Derby Telegraph.
His mother, Jill Watson, said: “I would like to say that he wasn’t just our son, he was a true friend.
“He was kindhearted, thoughtful, full of fun and he liked to laugh.
“He was really smart, he worked very hard with his degree. He had moved to the Derby only six months ago.
“He was happy and couldn’t wait for life to bring him.
She said at the hearing that Jack and his girlfriend Alexa Heacock had been together since they were only 16, adding, “You just wish you could turn back the clock.”
Ms. Heacock said the couple were leaving the venue when the tragic incident occurred and that the couple were “between happy and drunk.”
She explained: “She decided it would be fun to slide off the railing.
“He went and slid along the railing on his butt to get to the bottom of the first landing.
“But he rolled over backwards and fell all the way down the spiral staircase instead.”
She then she rushed down the stairs beside him before calling an ambulance.
A post-morgen showed that he became unconscious “almost instantly” and died of a head injury caused by the fall.
Assistant coroner Tanyka Rawden told the investigation that there was no CCTV footage of the incident, but the venue’s general manager Steve Fletcher said it has now been installed in that area.
A Derby City Council inspector found that the railings were structurally sound and up to national standards.
