Harrison Ballantyne died in 2017
Harrison Ballantyne died in June 2017 after gaining access to the Daventry International Rail Freight Terminal in Northamptonshire to retrieve a soccer ball.
The boy climbed onto a stationary freight car and was fatally electrocuted from an overhead line.
He was pronounced dead at the scene.
WH Malcolm Limited, the operator of the depot, was fined £ 6.5million by Northampton Crown Court on Friday after found guilty of health and safety deficiencies, the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) said with.
It is one of the harshest sentences imposed on an ORR indictment.
The court heard that, according to the supervisory authority, the company had not assessed the risk of unauthorized access to the depot.
ORR’s Chief Railroad Inspector Ian Prosser said, “Our thoughts stay with Harrison’s family and friends.
“It is only right that WH Malcolm should be held accountable for failing to prevent unauthorized access and failing to face the risks of a totally avoidable tragedy.
“The rail industry has done an excellent job preventing unauthorized entry and educating children about the risks, but this case serves as a reminder that serious events like this should happen if rail access is not properly controlled.”
30-year-old Dave Warner, who lives in the nearby village of Crick, said: “Harrison was apparently trying to recover a soccer ball when he was electrocuted.
“God only knows what he did in the train depot, it’s really in the middle of nowhere, but there are fields in the back of the depot, so maybe he was playing there.
“My local newsboy is best friends with Harrison. I was told that a group of them were all walking down a bridle path to Kilsby.
“The train line runs next to the bridle path, so he must have got lost on it. It is tragic and a real cloud has settled over the village.
“From what the people in the village have said, Harrison was a lovable, fun, and popular boy. It’s so horrible that his young life has just been wiped out like that. ‘
