A person with an interest in the horrific shooting on the Brooklyn subway Tuesday has been identified as Frank R. James , according to New York City police.

Police have released two photos of James as they continue to pursue him in connection with the mass shooting that left 23 injured, including 10 with gunshot wounds.

Incident Details

According to authorities, 29 people were injured Tuesday morning after a shooting and a smoke bomb attack on the Brooklyn subway.

It happened around 8:24 a.m. Mr. on an N train bound for Manhattan at Sunset Park.

Graphic images show the aftermath of the violence as victims lay bloodied on the 36th Street station platform, CBS2’s Jessica Moore reported.

Police said a man wearing a green utility vest attached to a gas mask set off a smoke bomb in the moving car. He then shot at least 10 people.

“The train started to fill with smoke at that time. He then opened fire, beating several people on the subway and on the platform,” New York City Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell said.

Josh Aryeh was on the train when he heard gunshots.

“I was just hiding. I moved away. I tried to make room for this old lady who even gave me her little pepper spray from her bag in case something happened,” Aryeh said. “She handed it to me from her purse and said, ‘Use it, just in case.’ People were so desperate.”

Video Footage

Video from inside the train shows the chaos as a commuter knocked on the door of a subway car, desperately trying to escape, but the next car’s door was locked.

“There was a lot of blood on the floor and thank God the train moved in a minute or I don’t know what would have happened if we had been stuck there for a long time,” Aryeh said.

Investigators say the shooter, described as a black man, 5ft 5in with a stocky build, emptied several rounds of ammunition. Police later found a Glock-type pistol at the 36th Street station.

CBS2 has learned that many of the injured ran through the dark subway tunnel and onto 25th Street.

“A lady was lying on the ground with blood pouring from her leg and was shot. People were screaming for help,” said witness Yahya Ibrahim.

“There were people coming out of the station bleeding,” added Ijaira González.

Chopper 2 video shows a massive police presence shutting down 10 blocks. Bomb-sniffing dogs and counterterrorism units stood by while federal and state authorities investigated. Sources told CBS News the attack was premeditated and is being investigated as a crime, not terrorism. So far he has escaped the police.
