A Michigan man died after a baby shower took a tragic turn when a cannon unexpectedly exploded.

Evan Thomas Silva, 26, was fatally injured after a cannon fired at a party and shells were sent in Genesee County, Michigan on Saturday night.

A small number of family members attended the garden party to celebrate the expected arrival of the baby.

The small device fired into the backyard of a house by the owner detonated and sprayed shards that hit Silva, who was 10 to 15 feet away.

The 26-year-old was taken to Hurley Medical Center in Flint in serious condition, where he later died.

The Michigan State Police Bombardment Squad, Gaines City Fire Department and the Med Star Ambulance witnessed the scene.

Police said the victim was one of five people outside the residence when the cannon was fired. He was the only one to have been hit by shrapnel.

Three parked cars and the garage where the baby shower was held were also hit by shrapnel.

Police said in a statement

“The owner had purchased the gun at auction before the event and had fired the gun several times already.”

An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help cover the cost of the funeral after Silva’s death.

On the side it says: “On 02/02/21 we lost Evan Silva in a sudden fatal accident.

“He left behind many family and friends who miss him dearly and mourn him.

“We are soliciting donations to help the Evans family organize the funeral. Thoughts and prayers are also greatly appreciated. ‘

In recent years, some gender events have shown that devices that throw confetti, balloons, or other brightly colored objects to announce the sex of an unborn baby have taken a dangerous turn.

In September, a couple’s plans to use blue or pink smoke to reveal the gender of their baby sparked a fire that burned thousands of acres in Southern California.

In 2019, a homemade explosive revealed the gender of a child Pamela Kreimeyer, 56, who was killed in Knoxville, Iowa.

The device was supposed to spray powder, but exploded like a homemade bomb.
