Buck’s arrest in 2019 marked a turning point for activists who demonstrated outside the home and pressured law enforcement to take action on Buck’s apartment after Moore’s death in 2017.
Even after the death of 55-year-old Timothy Dean 18 months later, another nine months and the imminent death of another overdose victim passed before Buck was arrested in September 2019.
“This man did terrible things to people,” Joann Campbell, one of Dean’s sisters, said after the verdict.
Family members and activists had been pushing for Buck’s arrest since Moore’s death.
They said Buck has been evading criminal charges for years because of his wealth of him, his political connections and his race of him.
“Ed Buck will never hurt anyone else, and I thank God for that,” said Joyce Jackson, another sister of Dean.
Buck is a wealthy white man who campaigned for gay and animal rights.
He has donated more than $ 500,000 to mostly Democratic politicians and charities since 2000.
Prosecutors say he exploited vulnerable men, mostly black, by paying them to come to his house to take drugs and play s*x games to satisfy a fetish.
Many were penniless drug addicts who often worked as prostitutes for a living.
The defense claims that all the men went to Buck’s apartment of their own free will and that Moore and Dean were not killed by methamphetamine.
