A Colorado father has been convicted of killing his son after the boy found photos of him wearing a red bra and eating feces from a diaper.

Mark Redwine, 59, was convicted by a unanimous jury on Friday and convicted of second degree murder and child abuse which resulted in the death of his son Dylan Redwine in 2012.

He faces up to 48 years in prison for a murder conviction and his verdict hearing has been set for 9 a.m. October 8

Redwine was indicted in 2017 in connection with the disappearance of 13-year-old Dylan, who went missing on November 19, 2012 during a court-ordered Thanksgiving visit to his father’s home outside the town of La Durango .

The boy’s father showed no visible reaction to reading the sentences as he stood in front of him with his hands clasped. Before the verdicts were read, Redwine had nervously fiddled with his tie while wearing a black shirt.

“It was an extremely difficult case for everyone involved. It was difficult for the parties, for the lawyers, for their employees, for the families and for the whole community ”, declared the judge before pronouncing the sentence.

“This case has cost the entire state and county of La Plata a lot of resources. The planning to get this business off the ground in the best possible way was extensive.

The judge added: “Emotions are very high on both sides, but this is a court. Hope everyone in this room behaves appropriately. ”

Dylan Redwine’s remains were found a few miles from his father’s house in 2013, and hikers found his skull in 2015.

Prosecutors alleged Redwine killed Dylan on a whim after arguing over embarrassing photos of him wearing lingerie and eating diaper feces.

Dylan’s older brother said in June that Dylan found the photos a year before his disappearance.

The children accidentally saw the image on the father’s computer on a road trip in 2011 and saw it in a closed bathroom while the father slept.

Dylan’s brother Cory Redwine took his photos to save them to the phone. During questioning, she said she sent copies of the compromising photos to her father in August 2012 as Dylan and Mark Redwine were traveling alone together.

Dylan was aware of the photos and was not injured on this trip despite the SMS confrontation between Cory and Mark Redwine.

Calling her father a “coward who eats oaths,” Cory said, “You are what you eat,” she read text messages revealed in court in June.

In response, Mark Redwine responded, “so as not to hurt Dylan,” said prosecutor John Moran.

Mark Redwine also called Cory a thief for taking the photos and said he tried to hurt him and his mother, with whom he was in a controversial custody battle at the time.

Cory had testified that the accidental discovery of the photos had ruined Dylan’s relationship and his image of his father.

“Dylan lost all reason to watch Mark that day,” Cory Redwine said.

He told the court his younger brother was “quite upset” and said he would use the photos as leverage in an argument with his father a year later.

“Hey send me those poop pics of dad because he gave me a speech about you being a bad example and I want to show him who he really is,” Dylan Redwine said in a text message. to court documents from his older brother in August. 2012. ..

Redwine, who did not testify in court, told investigators he left Dylan home alone to run errands and returned to find him missing.

Defense attorneys suggestion

Defense attorneys suggested the photos had no connection to Dylan Redwine’s death and that the boy had escaped and could have been killed by a wild animal. Defenseman John Moran called Dylan’s skull injury a tooth trail.

Forensic anthropologist Diane France testified that Dylan suffered a broken left eye. Two marks on the boy’s skull were likely caused by a knife or sharp tool, France said.

Meanwhile, Redwine’s defense said in concluding discussions that expert testimony showed Dylan’s skull was still in a peri-mortem state in 2015 when it was discovered.

Assistant Special Counsel Fred Johnson told the jury that investigators found traces of Dylan’s blood in Redwin’s living room and that a dog sniffing the body warned them of the smell of human remains on the back of Redwin’s truck and on your clothes.

But Moran said the “infinitely small” amount of blood found in the living room would likely be in every home. He also called the use of dogs “junk science”.

The case caught national attention when Redwine and the boy’s mother, Elaine Hall, met during their appearances on the television show “Dr. Phil ‘in 2013.

Hall said in court that he sent Dylan to his father’s house on November 18, 2012, learned the next day that he was missing, and immediately drove six hours to southwest La Plata county to look for his son. Hall said he didn’t know his son crashed into his father because of the photos.

Hall suspected almost immediately that her ex-husband wasn’t telling the whole truth about her son’s disappearance, the text messages being presented as evidence. Two hours after learning of Dylan’s disappearance, Hall wrote to Mark Redwine.

“I just didn’t want to go,” he wrote. “He would have called me. I am very suspicious of you at the moment. How did it go away?

Bogan suggested that his account was ruined by a contentious divorce and custody battle with Redwine. He also suggested that Hall’s appearance on national television steered public opinion against her ex-husband and influenced the direction of the police investigation.

Hall insisted on speaking to the media and participating in a Mark Redwine protest to bring Dylan home.

“I thought he was safe because he was with his father and I was devastated that no one knew where my son was,” she said.

During the trial, prosecutors focused on the compromising photos of Redwine, arguing that the father-son relationship was in decline long before Dylan’s disappearance. Prosecutors also focused on comments Dylan made to his family and friends about fear of the court-ordered visit.

Redwine was arrested in Bellingham, Washington, in 2017 after being charged before a grand jury. At the time, prosecutors said the “compromising photos” were a point of contention between Redwine and Dylan. You did not get involved.
