“This crime shocked not just the local community, but the entire Bay Area and the nation,” Alameda district attorney Nancy O’Malley said in a statement. “I hope that today’s action and announcement will bring some comfort to Michaela’s family as they know that justice will prevail 32 years after this horrific crime.”
Misch, currently incarcerated for the 1989 murder of a woman near Hayward, is believed to have killed two women in Fremont in 1986, O’Malley said.
Michaela’s body was not found, but the footprints on the scooter she was driving at the time of the kidnapping match those of Misch. A witness also saw him at the site of the abduction on November 19, 1988, said O’Malley.
Michaela and a friend went to a grocery store in Hayward and left their scooters outside while they went shopping. A few minutes later, the young people came out and saw that one of the scooters had been placed behind a parked car. The driver of the vehicle, which authorities suspect is mixed, forced the girl to sit in the front seat and to the left, O’Malley said.
“There are no words that can adequately describe the horror of an abducted child,” the prosecutor told reporters at a press conference, KPIX reported. “Especially if the baby or the baby’s remains were never found … they were just babies.”
Misch could be sentenced to death if convicted, the broadcaster said.
Michaela’s mother, Sharon Murch, posted a statement Monday that she “came so far as to accept” that her daughter was no longer alive last year, CNN reported.
“Over the years, I’ve often wondered if I really wanted to know the truth about what happened to Michaela,” said Murch. “I was wondering if I could take it. As I told our detective, I’m glad the kidnapper was identified. I’m glad there are answers. I am glad this man can never hurt anyone else. “”
Meanwhile, Michaela’s father has said he hoped Misch would tell authorities what happened to his daughter’s body.
“You have a suspect to question and I hope he coughs wherever the body is,” 71-year-old Rod Garecht told KPIX on Monday.
