TWO young brothers who were killed in a hail of bullets by a mad shooter were killed by their father, their heartbroken grandmother said.
David and Daniel Fusinato, ages 5 and 10, were killed while playing on the street in the Italian town of Ardea, near Rome, this morning.
Their grandmother, Sonia di Gennaro, said that the children’s father, Domenico, was with them until the end.
She told the Italian newspaper La Stampa: “You died at the hands of your father.
“The ambulance was late, it took half an hour.”
She went on to describe the children as “polite and respectful.”
“Yesterday [Daniel] came to my house and left without saying goodbye. Instead, he came back and wanted to give me a little kiss,” she added.
The brothers reportedly received at least five bullets to the heart and throat while playing a few dozen meters from their home.
An 84-year-old man named Salvatore Ranieri was also killed in the attack while riding a bicycle.
Shooter Andrea Pignani, a 34-year-old computer scientist with psychiatric problems, is said to have committed suicide after his escape.
He barricaded himself in the house for three hours before police broke in and found him dead in his room.
Military and medics stormed the area after receiving multiple calls about a street shooting.
A witness told Repubblica: “I heard four shots and looked out the window.
“I saw the children on the ground, then an older man came with a bicycle. The attacker fired two more shots at him and then headed towards his house.”
Another said the children’s father screamed when he tried to save them.
Romano Catino, president of the Colle Romito Consortium, told Ansa Agency: “When we heard the explosion, we thought it was a rocket launched by a child.
“Then we approached the area and found that there were more shots.
“We immediately called the police, who arrived very early. Then I immediately sent a message in the consortium chat to invite everyone to stay home.
“Fortunately, many of the members of the consortium were by the sea.”

And Francesco Rizzo, 31, who has lived in Colle Romito in Ardea for five years, says: “The children, very young, were lying on the ground with blood on their chests.
“They gave them a heart massage. The father was desperate, he said they had no heartbeat.”
Daniel would have dreamed of becoming a footballer and becoming the next Gianluigi Donnarumma.
After the incident, the mayor of Rome Virginia Raggi said: “We are deeply saddened by the death of the two children and the old man.”
And Mariastella Gelmini, Minister of Regional Affairs and Autonomies, wrote on Twitter: “In Ardea an absurd tragedy that takes your breath away.
“Three innocent people, including two children, were killed in the street for no apparent reason.
“A prayer for the victims, a sincere condolences to their families and a sincere closeness to the entire parish of the Lazio parish.”
