Cauich, who has a long criminal record, was on hold for theft citing court documents when a judge released him from prison last week, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
He is now charged, among other things, with attempted murder, sexual abuse of the elderly and committing a crime on bail.
Investigators are trying to determine if race was the reason for the attack, police said.
The attack comes amid a wave of attacks on Asian Americans in San Francisco and across the country since the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States.
In southern California, authorities said on Wednesday they were investigating another attack on an Asian American woman as a possible hate crime. A man assaulted the victim around 1 a.m. Monday morning on his way to work in Culver City, a suburb of Los Angeles.
The attack was recorded by security cameras and video was released by police to identify the attacker who fled.
Culver City Police said the man asked the woman for a cigarette and she did not have one.
“When the victim tried to escape, the suspect approached her from behind, yelled a racist blow at her and hit her on the right side of the head, causing her to fall to the ground,” he said. the police said in a statement.
Firefighters treated the woman with a severe tear in her right ear and took her to hospital for treatment. Police said he should make a full recovery.
