A Miami man Corthoris Jenkins who allegedly pursued an unarmed burglar and shot him repeatedly while begging for his life is charged with attempted murder.

Corthoris Jenkins Age

Corthoris Jamal Jenkins, 28, was playing video games in his North Miami Dade Efficiency bedroom on Tuesday when a suspected burglar, Xavier West, broke into the house, the Miami Herald reported.

But instead of picking up the phone to call the police, Jenkins grabbed an assault rifle and shot West several times as West was on his knees after chasing him down a street, police and prosecutors said. .

“He’s starting to beg for his life,” Miami Detective Dade Iry Watson told a judge on Wednesday.

“But the accused takes the assault rifle and shoots him several times.”

Jenkins, who first told police he “went black” before the shooting, apparently admitted to shooting west during Wednesday’s hearing, the Herald reported.

“I didn’t shoot him when he was down,” Jenkins told a judge. “I am the victim, ma’am.”

Judge Mindy Glazer

Judge Mindy Glazer disagreed with that claim, according to the report.

“You are the victim of a possible break-in, but you can’t just walk around shooting people,” Glazer retorted.

Prosecutors also insisted the video shows Jenkins’ actions were deliberate – and Glazer upheld that assessment in court, the Herald reported.

“He had time to think it over when he pleaded on his knees with the gun,” the judge said. “That’s the intention.”

West was recovering in a Miami hospital on Wednesday, the newspaper reported. An update on his condition was not immediately available early Friday.

“He’s still intubated from his injuries,” Watson said Wednesday.

It is not known if West and Jenkins were connected prior to the attempted break-in on Tuesday, the newspaper reported.

Jenkins, detained on Friday for attempted murder with a deadly weapon, was found by officers who left the scene after the shooting and immediately turned his gun, according to a police report.

The case could be another legal test of Florida’s Stand Your Ground self-defense law, which led to the 2013 acquittal of neighborhood guard George Zimmerman of second degree murder in the death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. unarmed, in 2012, at Sanford.

Zimmerman had claimed he feared for his life when he shot Martin in a confrontation as Martin walked home from a store thinking the teen was a burglar.

The high-profile acquittal sparked widespread protests, national debates over the use of force and the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement.
