Three children and a woman were found dead in a house in Fort Wayne on Wednesday, and an acquaintance of the victims was arrested hours later more than 100 miles away, authorities said.

According to police,  Cohen Hancz Barron, 21, was arrested Wednesday evening in Lafayette in connection with the killings.

The bodies of the unidentified victims were found between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., says Fort Wayne Police Spokesman Sgt. Jeremy Webb. Webb says the kids were very young.

“If you kill children it will be terrible,” said Webb.

Although Webb claims that Hancz-Barron knew the woman and three children, police are unsure of their relationship with the victims.

Prior Arrest

Prior to his arrest, police described Hancz-Barron as “armed and extremely dangerous,” possibly driving a black 2010 Ford pickup truck that was stolen Wednesday morning. He was taken into custody thanks to a combined effort by the Murder, Gang, and Violent Crime Division, Deputy and Narcotics Division, and the Indiana State Police, authorities said.

Although authorities failed to identify the victims, a family representative issued a statement asking for time to process their loss and respect for their privacy.

Fort Wayne is approximately 209 kilometers northeast of Indianapolis.

A database compiled by The Associated Press, USA Today, and Northeastern University tracking mass murders, defined as four or more deaths without the author, shows this to be the sixteenth mass murder in this country. Four of them took place in Indiana. .

The other three mass murders in Indiana in 2021 include the fatal shooting of eight people in April at a FedEx facility in Indianapolis and the fatal shooting of three adults and one child in a home in Indianapolis in March. In January, five people, including a pregnant woman, were also shot dead in a house in Indianapolis.
