A New York state father was killed when a device he was building for such a show party exploded, state police said Monday.
Christopher Pekny, 28, was working on the device for his son’s gender reveal party in the town of Liberty, Catskills, when it exploded just before noon Sunday.

The blast killed Pekny and injured his brother Michael Pekny, 27, who was being treated for his injuries at Garnet Medical Center in Middletown.
The Robin Hood restaurant at Livingston Manor, owned and operated by the Pekny family since the 1980s, issued a statement mourning Christopher.
“We are deeply saddened and must inform you of the loss of our dear and beloved Christopher,” the family wrote on Facebook.
“We appreciate the extraordinary show of love and support that everyone has done.”
Police said the incident is still under investigation.
This is just the latest in a series of tragedies caused by faulty detection devices in recent years.
Earlier this month, a 26-year-old Michigan man died after being struck by a splinter from a defective barrel used during a baby shower.
Another genre pyrotechnic device sparked a massive fire in Southern California in September 2020 that burned thousands of acres.
