Two college football players Christian Eubanks and Caleb VanHooser among three killed in fiery crash, Indiana officials say.

Three Indiana State University students were killed in an accident Sunday, Aug. 21, that also injured two others, officials say.

Four of the five people involved in the crash, including two of the fatalities, were members of the university football team. Indiana State University is located in Terre Haute, about 75 miles southwest of Indianapolis. “There are no words to express the depth of our sadness at this tragedy,” said Dr. Deborah J. Curtis, President of Indiana State University, in a statement Monday, August 22, involved students.

The Sycamore family is mourning and will support one another during this time of grief.” The crash happened around 1:30 a.m. in Riley, about 10 miles from the Indiana state campus, WTHR reported. “Investigators determined that the car suddenly went off the road, crashed into a tree and caught fire with five people inside,” the station said.

The driver and two passengers were pronounced dead at the scene, WISH reported. They were identified as Christian Eubanks, 18, by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office on Monday, August 22; Jayden Musili, 19; and Caleb VanHooser, 19. VanHooser and Eubanks were freshmen on the university football team, according to the team’s roster. Musili was described by the university as “a hard worker with a positive attitude”. The two injured victims have been identified as Omarion Dixon, 20, and John Moore, 19, and they are also on the football team. Both are in serious condition but are not in intensive care, according to the athletic department.

“It’s a terrible day for Indiana State football and a devastating loss to both the Eubanks and VanHooser families,” said Curt Mallory, Indiana State football coach. “Both young men were high profile individuals who were loved and respected by their teammates and by these employees. To say they are missed is an understatement.” The state of Indiana begins its football season on Thursday, September 1st.
