A Ukrainian survivor of the Nazi Holocaust during World War II was killed in a Russian attack in the eastern city of Kharkiv.

Boris Romanchenko, 96, was killed on Friday in a Russian bombing of his building, relatives said.

Russian forces relentlessly bombed Kharkiv, just 50km from the border, for more than three weeks.

According to the Ukrainian authorities, at least 500 civilians were killed there.

Police say one of the victims was identified as a nine-year-old boy.

Buchenwald and the Mittelbau-Dora Memorials Foundation were “deeply shocked” by Romantschenko’s death.

The organization, of which Romanchenko was vice president, announced the news after being informed by his family, saying that he had “worked hard to commemorate Nazi crimes”.

“We mourn the loss of a dear friend. We wish your son and granddaughter, who brought us the sad news, much strength in these difficult times. ”

Romanchenko’s death comes more than three weeks after President Vladimir Putin tried to justify his invasion of the Russian people by telling them that his goal was to “denazify Ukraine”.

Western leaders condemned the claims, pointing out that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is Jewish.

Mr. Romanchenko was born on January 20, 1926 in the northeastern town of Bondari.

He was arrested by Nazi troops after the invasion of the Soviet Union and deported to Germany in 1942, where he was forced into forced labor, the foundation said.

After a failed escape attempt in 1943, he was sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp, where the Allies killed some 56,545 people before his release in 1945.

He also spent time in the satellite camp of Mittelbau-Dora and in the infamous Bergen-Belsen and Peenemünde camps.
