An arrest was made nearly 50 years after the kidnapping and murder of a 15-year-old girl.
Barry Lee Whelpley, 76, was arrested by Naperville police on Wednesday, the division said on Friday.
The retired welder was living in Mounds View, Minnesota at the time of his arrest, but was 27 and lived a mile from victim Julie Ann Hanson, 15, in the fatal accident on July 8, 1972.
The police chief said at a press conference that Julie borrowed her brother’s bike to go to a baseball game that day, but did not return home.
Julie was reported missing that day and her body was later found in a field in Naperville with multiple stab wounds. The bicycle was found on a nearby dirt road.
Investigators said Julie was s*xually assaulted and stabbed 36 times, according to WLS.
“She was very nice, a very sweet girl,” neighbor Peggy Thompson said of Julie. “She was only a few years older than us, but she looked after a few children in the neighborhood.”
“No one closed the doors. We all knew that and then it happened and I called it the end of the age of innocence, ”added Thompson. Because it quickly became a very scary existence, especially for us children. ”
Without immediate suspicion, the case was closed, despite the fact that police have been investigating for five decades.
“This horrific crime has haunted this family, this neighborhood and this department for 49 years,” Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall said.
Marshall added that Julie’s photo has remained on investigators’ desks over the years.
“This has never been an unsolved case for our police,” Marshall said.
Police cited “technological advances in DNA analysis and genetic genealogy” as the reason for their latest discovery.
Authorities have refused to investigate the DNA evidence for fear it would jeopardize the prosecution of the case.
“We cannot go into specifics,” Glasgow County District Attorney Will James said.
“I think all media are probably aware of this trial and these investigators have used it very skillfully and brought the charges here today,” Glasgow added.
Still, WLS reports that one of Whelpley’s relatives used a commercial DNA service to learn more about his family’s history.
This created a link between Whelpley and DNA from the crime scene.
Whelpley has been charged with three first degree murders and is being held on $ 10 million bail.

“The investigation and subsequent allegations have truly been a decade of teamwork, and I could not be more proud of the determination and ingenuity of our investigators, past and present, who have never given up. Julie, “he added.
Whelpley is awaiting extradition to Illinois, Naperville police said.
According to CNN, it is not clear whether Whelpley has an attorney representing him.
As seen in the patch, Marshall read a statement from the Hanson family thanking investigators for their work on the case.
“As you can imagine, this has been a long journey for our family,” the statement said. “We are grateful to everyone who has worked on this case over the years.”
Julie’s parents died before their alleged killer was captured, but her brother and sister are still alive.
Thompson, the neighbor, added: “Personally, I am very grateful that you have found someone. I am disappointed that he has lived freely for 50 years.
The Naperville Police Department continues to seek information from the public on the case.
