Sources said the gun violence in broad daylight at Crossroads of the World on June 27 was the result of an argument with a breakdancer the night before, when the teen apparently overtook the artist.
The next day, the teenager returned to the resort and the two left, prompting the boy to draw a gun and open fire, police sources said.
But the bullet ricocheted and hit 21-year-old Samuel Poulin in the upper back as he and his family passed the Marriott Hotel on West 45th Street and Broadway at around 5:15 pm, police said at the time.
The Marine was in the Big Apple for a baptism and a tour of the hinterland.
A surveillance video released by NYPD captured the chaotic moment and showed the shooter shooting wildly.
Darden was charged with attempted murder, assault, reckless danger and criminal possession of weapons.
The teenager was the subject of five previous arrests, all sealed, according to sources.
The shooting in the target city was the second this year.
In early May, a four-year-old girl and two women were killed a block from where they had shot Poulin. Police then arrested alleged 31-year-old shooter Farrakhan Muhammad in Florida a few weeks later.
Muhammad denied any responsibility for the shooting.
