Ashley Dale, 28, was also suspected to have been murdered when thugs burst through her door and sprayed bullets into her home.

The community worker was enjoying her night when one of the random shots fired hit her.

It was also revealed that her younger brother Lewis Dunne was also killed in a 2015 shooting at the age of 16 with a false identity.

The two cases are assumed to be completely independent of each other.

The family described Ashley as a “shining light” and said their “hearts are broken into a million pieces” after she died in hospital yesterday from complications from a gunshot in Old Swan, Merseyside.

They added: “Ashley was a hard working young woman with her whole life ahead of her.

“She had just been promoted at her job at Knowsley Council. She had a degree and so many plans for her bright future that was just beginning. Her laugh, smile and energy were contagious in every room.

“We can’t face the way that would happen to a defenseless woman in her own home. None of this makes sense and our lives will never be the same again.

“A senseless crime that tore a family apart. Justice is needed.”

Tributes for her also poured in online as neighbors and friends expressed their shock, reports Liverpool ECHO.

Paige Elizabeth wrote: “This is heartbreaking. RIP Ashley. Taken much too young.”

Kayleigh Elizabeth Crowe added, “Such a pretty girl.”

Merseyside Police Detective Chief Superintendent Mark Kameen told ECHO: “She was a young, innocent woman enjoying her life.

“So at this point we don’t think Ashley was involved in any way. We believe the property was attacked.”

It is not yet known what type of weapon was used in the attack, but police have ruled out a shotgun-type weapon.

Ashley lived there mostly alone. The front door was forced open and a gun was indiscriminately used inside on several occasions, Chief Supt Kameen added.

He said: “Ashley was inside, exactly where she was supposed to be, enjoying her Saturday night and Sunday morning and she was hit by one of those gunshots.

“This proved fatal despite the best efforts of Merseyside Police and then the North West Ambulance Service.”

He urged the public to submit any information that might help the investigation.
