Witte, who previously lived in Suriname according to authorities, was arrested in Miami in February. According to the Justice Department, she was charged by the Cleveland federal court on Friday.
The indictment, which according to the Justice Department is part of its newly developed ransomware task force, comes as the Biden government faces a growing plague of ransomware attacks targeting television channels, critical supplies, especially meat and fuel. The White House, which is also involved in cyber espionage campaigns against the US government, issued a warning this week emphasizing that fighting ransomware is a top priority.
“These allegations serve as a warning to potential cybercriminals that the Department of Justice, through the Ransomware Task Force and Digital Extortion and our partners, will use all tools at our disposal to destroy the cybercrime ecosystem,” he said. Assistant Attorney General Lisa. Monaco said in a statement.
The prosecution alleges that Witte was involved in a scheme that stole millions of dollars from companies around the world by infecting computers with malware that collects personal information such as credit card numbers and passwords and allowing TrickBot members to access computers that made the sacrifice possible.
The allegations include real estate and law firms, a country club, public school districts and other businesses.
Prosecutors say Witte worked as a malware developer for the group, writing ransomware-related code that told victims that they would have to purchase special software to decrypt their files. She is also accused of providing code that monitors and tracks authorized users of the malware.
In October, weeks before the 2020 presidential election, Microsoft announced legal action to stop TrickBot in an operation to shut down command and control servers.
The charge, which includes several other defendants whose names have been withheld, includes charges of conspiracy for computer fraud, aggravated identity theft and other offenses.
At first it was unclear whether Witte had a lawyer.
