A homeless man who pushed a woman in front of a train that crashed into Union Square Station was sentenced to eight years in prison on Thursday for unprovoked assault, prosecutors said.

Aditya Vemulapati, 26, who pleaded guilty to attempted murder in June, will also face five years of post-release supervision as part of his sentence, Manhattan prosecutors said in a statement.

Vemulapati accidentally pushed Liliana Sagbaicela, 40, in front of a No. 4 train when it arrived at Union Square around 8:30 a.m. on November 19, 2020.

Sagbaicela miraculously survived the attack after landing on the platform bed and being hit by several train cars, police said at the time.

“Fortunately for her, she fell between the row bed and the railings,” Kathleen O’Reilly, then Transit Chief, said after the attack. “Very slight injuries, but by the grace of God”.

After the attack, Sagbaicela told 1010 WINS that she saw the push footage and realized how lucky she was to be alive.

“I saw the man in the video – oh my god, I can’t believe it,” Sagbaicela told the radio station. “Right? Now I understand why everyone and the police tell me, ‘You live for miracles. You are a miracle. ”

Vemulapati was arrested shortly after the incident and has since been in jail.

“Today’s decision makes it clear that we will hold accountable those who cause damage to our subway system,” District Attorney Alvin Bragg said in a statement Thursday.

“We will continue to focus on those who damage webbing hangers simply by trying to get home or to work.”
